Mr. Gilson, and his engineering classes are growing tomatoes using the hydroponic method. Hydroponics involves growing plants without the use of soil, but mineral nutrient solutions and water. To grow plants like this, you start the seed in a grow plug, which is  a small soil sponge. Once the plant is mature enough it is transplanted into a food grade bucket of pearlite, the mineral nutrient. Throughout this whole process, the water is pumped in, through, and back out of the drip irrigation system. When growing plants in water, you need a source of light that provides them with substantial energy that they can use for photosynthesis. A panel of  different colored LED lights are used to replicate natural sunlight.
