During the night on Wednesday, September 18th Tropical Storm Imelda hit the community. The storm was devastating not only because of the intense rainfall of the storm but because some in the community have barely recovered from Hurricane Harvey.

“People who flooded last time got double this time,” Library Aide Arva Wright said. “It’s horrible. We can’t predict nature.”

Several of the faculty and students were affected this time around. Sophomore Nia Lewis, founder of the non-profit TMAD, was one of those.

“This has been the most stressful time my family has dealt with in a while. We lost everything in our house,” Lewis said.

Imelda was so devastating because of the sheer volume of rainfall in such a short amount of time. It was estimated the area would only receive 10 inches of rain but  30 – 40 inches fell during the 24 hour time span.

“Flooding is awful,” English Teacher Devon Richey said. “There’s nothing you can do to stop it. You just have to watch.”
