For years our school has struggled with students skipping class and using stolen hall passes to walk the halls. This school year, the administration has found a solution to their problems, bright orange vests. On September 4, construction site vests were handed out to teachers as “hall passes” for students to wear when leaving class.
“I don’t like the vests because they’re doing too much, we’re too old for it”, Junior Myquala Lazenby said.
Students are against the new vests rule because of the way the look. Most students feel embarrassed while wearing the vests, and they don’t wear them correctly because of this.
“They are better than the paper and plastic passes. Those were more unsanitary than the vests. They didn’t even clean those,” Junior Chattoria Wade said.
Some students are for the vest because it takes more time for a teacher to stop the class and write a note. With the vests, the teacher can just point it out.
“I found it kinda odd that we have to wear it, but people just drag it across the floor and thats super unsanitary,” Junior Megan Dorantes said.
There are pros and cons to these vibrant vests, but they are here to stay!

I for one do not mind the vest. I believed that the purpose of them was to make students not want to get out of class, make it easier to spot those that are wandering the halls, and to keep the hall passes “cleaner”. There are some inconsistencies with the policy though. One of those inconsistencies is that you are supposed to wear the vest. We are allowing students to roam the halls just carrying the vests instead. It also is not keeping students from wandering. Just the other day I caught 3 male students wandering the hallways together, not a single one in the same hallway, and just making a circle. I personally like the vest in the sense that it does make it easier to spot students who are out of class and distinguish office aids from other students.
